From May 27th to 29th, AM Group participated in the Green Med Expo & Symposium in Naples, one of Italy’s leading events dedicated to environmental sustainability, the circular economy, and green innovation.
The event provided an important opportunity for the group to share a clear vision with institutions, businesses, and citizens: waste should not be seen as a problem, but as a valuable resource capable of generating environmental, social, and economic benefits when managed correctly.
Through its companies – Gruppo LEM, Open SWM Srl, Open SWM Ltd, and Ecology Logistics Malta – AM Group presented projects and initiatives that demonstrate how the ecological transition can become a tangible reality for communities, businesses, and local territories.
A New Approach to Small WEEE Collection
Among the innovations presented during the Green Med Expo was a new collection container designed specifically for small Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
Every year, millions of small electronic devices end up in residual waste streams or remain unused in households because people are often unsure of where or how to dispose of them properly.
To address this challenge, AM Group has developed a collection system aimed at installing dedicated WEEE containers in strategic urban locations, making it easier for citizens to dispose of smartphones, chargers, small household appliances, cables, and other electronic devices responsibly.
The initiative has a dual purpose: increasing WEEE collection rates while recovering valuable materials that can be reintroduced into production cycles, reducing environmental impact and supporting the principles of the circular economy.
Transforming Used Cooking Oil into Renewable Energy
Another key topic highlighted during the exhibition was the group’s used cooking oil collection service, currently operating both in Italy and Malta.
This circular economy initiative transforms a highly polluting waste stream into a renewable energy resource through biodiesel production.
In Malta, the service primarily targets hotels, restaurants, and the hospitality sector, while in Italy it serves both the Ho.Re.Ca. industry and residential condominiums that choose to install dedicated collection containers for residents.
The project represents a practical example of how waste recovery can create environmental value while encouraging businesses and citizens to adopt more sustainable waste management practices.
“Creative Recycling”: When Sustainability Meets Fashion
One of the most engaging projects showcased at the event was “Creative Recycling”, developed by AM Group in collaboration with fashion designer Pasquale Bilancio.
The initiative was created to raise awareness about environmental pollution and responsible waste management through an innovative and accessible communication tool: fashion.
The campaign, carried out throughout the streets of Naples, featured a collection of garments created entirely from recovered and recycled materials. Paper, plastic, electronic components, textiles, and other discarded materials were transformed into artistic creations capable of highlighting environmental challenges while encouraging public reflection on the value of waste.
The project’s core message is simple yet powerful: every waste material has value and can be transformed through responsible behavior, innovation, and creativity.
Presented at the Green Med Expo, the initiative demonstrated how environmental awareness can be effectively promoted through creative and engaging forms of communication capable of reaching diverse audiences and younger generations alike.
AM Group’s Environmental Impact in 2025
The projects presented during the exhibition are supported by measurable environmental results achieved by the group throughout 2025.
Through its used cooking oil collection and recovery activities, AM Group collected more than 5.1 million kilograms of waste cooking oil, contributing to the production of over 5.2 million litres of biodiesel.
This process resulted in the avoidance of more than 10,200 tonnes of net CO₂ emissions while generating over 48,000 MWh of renewable energy equivalent.
The group also achieved significant results in the collection and recovery of organic waste, processing more than 38 million kilograms of material that contributed to the production of biogas and renewable biomethane, avoiding further greenhouse gas emissions and generating more than 32,000 MWh of renewable energy equivalent.
These achievements are complemented by energy generation from photovoltaic systems, further demonstrating the group’s commitment to sustainable energy production and environmental responsibility.
